WINSTON-SALEM, September 16, 2006 Just two and a half weeks after opening its clinic doors, The North Carolina Sports Medicine Institute has introduced a novel therapy for hip disease in the active patient. On Friday, using minimally invasive surgical techniques, a patient was successfully treated for early degenerative joint disease and soft tissue injury. This patient was the first patient in North Carolina to be treated with this specific hip procedure.

Allston J. Stubbs, M.D., the surgeon who performed the surgery, completed the operation in just under four hours at Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem. “We are very pleased with the immediate outcome of the procedure and feel that this specific patient has an excellent prognosis,” reported Dr. Stubbs. The outpatient surgery was completed through two small incisions using innovative techniques in hip arthroscopy. Similar procedures in the past have involved a 10 inch incision and hip dislocation with a three to five day hospital stay. The new approach allows patients the opportunity to return to the activities they enjoy with fewer postoperative complications.
