BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND November 1, 2006 Dr. Allston J. Stubbs of The North Carolina Sports Medicine Institute received FDA required certification for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) system. Used extensively in Europe since 1997, the BHR was recently approved for use in the United States and is another alternative for patients considering a conventional hip replacement. A BHR was recently implanted in the right hip of 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis.
Mr. Derek McMinn, the British surgeon who developed the BHR implant and surgery, certified Dr. Stubbs at The Nuffield Hospital. “The BHR is an important technology for the younger patient with hip disease whose options have been historically limited,” commented Dr. Stubbs. The BHR implant offers a more bone conserving surgery with a lower rate of hip dislocation compared with traditional total hip replacement surgery. |
